On March 27th, 2015 there was a shake up in the Google search results for many niches. In fact, I received the following Google Webmaster Tools chart and it clearly shows a huge drop in traffic starting on March 27th, 2015. Check it out below:
It is quite clear something happened on March 27th. It is important to note that not all websites are hit with an algorithm update penalty when they see a decline in traffic. There are plenty of situations in which a website could receive a manual penalty to see this type of search impression drop. There is no way a website that saw this type of search drop has not received some type of penalty.
All that being said, it is important to remember that unique content and natural links is the natural SEO Google loves. If you are trying to figure out a way to do less work and rank higher you are playing a losing game. Blog spam comments, poor links pointing back to your website and thin content are all reasons your website could be penalized by Google.
Come up with a content strategy that will encourage reputable websites to have the desire to link back to your content. If you are willing to do this you will find that your Google Webmaster Tools chart looks more like this:
